Hello and welcome to my website! I'm Eileen Marcotte, a gourd artist designer based in Hayden, Idaho.
Artist Statement
I begin learning the personality of each gourd by holding it and feeling its unique shape and texture. I ask: Is it smooth, bumpy, scarred, or cracked? Sometimes I envision the design in advance; other times, the gourd reveals its own ideas. When the gourd is thick enough, I carve deep, expressive forms into its surface. When it is thin, I adorn it with beautiful dyes and basketry techniques. If the gourd is cracked, I transform that area into a loom, weaving intricate design that embrace imperfection.
Each gourd is a singular canvas with its own character - no two are ever the same. I celebrate this individuality, allowing each piece to tell its own unique story through the art it inspires.
